ISEE: Grades 5 - 12

Independent School Entrance Exam

About the ISEE

Since 1989, the ISEE has provided independent schools with a rigorous instrument for evaluating applicants. Steeped in ERB’s 80-year tradition of quality assessments and member services, the ISEE’s basic promises have not changed:

  • secure and flexible testing
  • accurate scoring
  • clear reporting
  • responsive and personal service

Yet the third edition of the ISEE (scheduled for release this fall) marks a series of advancements. Developed by Measurement Incorporated, we’ve enhanced our score reports, written thousands of new items, hundreds of new essay prompts, and provided free online practice tests to students. All the while, we have maintained our dedication to quality service – getting you the materials and test results you need when you need them.

Planning for the next generation

If our approach to developing the new ISEE changed at all, it was in the direction of greater ambition. We aimed to:

  • publish dozens of new forms for each level in the pencil-and-paper format
  • design a score report that is more informative and easier to read
  • produce a new interpretive guide for schools

A shorter test

We made the most significant change to the new ISEE in response to desires voiced by you, our ERB membership. For 2009, we reduced the time it takes to complete answer items, particularly for the Lower Level – shortening testing by 30 minutes without diminishing reliability and rigor. We confirmed with statisticians that each item is relevant, content-specific, and suited to our test blueprint design. Further, because scoring on the new ISEE is correlated to previous editions, the change in testing times will not change how you interpret scores.

Become a Test Site

Why become a test site?

There are many advantages to becoming an ISEE test administration site. ERB offers test sites Ben D. Wood fee waivers at no fee to the school, to be given to families in need of financial assistance. In addition, ERB will help coordinate and test your students who reside in a part of the country or the world where the ISEE is not offered by offering domestic and international remote testing options. Also, by being a test site, you offer your school as a testing option to families who may not have otherwise visited your campus and viewed your facilities. Many times, testers become applicants after a positive testing experience.

ISEE allows your school to select the date(s) of choice. Some schools work within a consortium and coordinate their testing dates to compliment the dates of the others schools with the designated area. Some schools like to offer the test once a year, others offer it once a month. ISEE allows the school to select the dates, the frequency of testing, the number of students who can be tested, and the check-in and start-time of testing. At any point during the testing season, additional testing dates may be added. To inquire further about signing up to be an ISEE test site, please email isee@erbtest.org.

How does my school become a test site?

To become a test site, the school must be an ERB member. On the day of testing, the school must be a neutral test site (no admissions activities can take place that day), and the school must administer the test as stated in the ISEE Supervisors and Administrators manuals. Please complete the following forms and fax them back to our ISEE Executive Office at (212) 370-4095.

Preparing for the ISEE

Preparation Books available at no fee.

ERB understands the value and desire for parents and students to “see” the types of questions that will be presented on each level of the test, and help make it as fair as possible for all families to gain access to the same information preparing students for the test. Beginning in September, ERB is pleased to offer new preparation books for each level FREE of charge when downloaded from the website www.iseetest.org, or for $20 each in hard copy format.

Preparation books available are:

What to Expect on the ISEE – Lower Level (Applicants to Grades 5 & 6)

What to Expect on the ISEE – Middle Level (Applicants to Grades 7 & 8)

What to Expect on the ISEE – Upper Level (Applicants to Grades 9-12)

Each book includes level specific background information about the ISEE test and experience, sample questions, a full-length practice test, scoring information, as well as a section on understanding the Individual Student Report (ISR) that will be received after testing. Please understand that these books are not training books for exam strategies, and they are not a shortcut to higher scores. The goal of these books is to help families understand the format of the test being taking, the directions given, the types of test items, and the answer sheet used. While other companies claim to have ISEE preparation books, know that these books are the only books authorized and approved by ERB.
