Norms and Results

Non-Stimulus Prompts

Non–stimulus student essays are scored using the 6 trait, 6 point rubric backed by expectations for each grade level. Individual trait scores, total trait scores, scale scores, percentiles, and stanines are reported on all non-stimulus reports. Scale scores, percentiles, and stanines are based on data that is analyzed using the previous two or three years’ results for that grade and genre. Mean total trait scores, percentiles, and stanines are also provided in reports for Independent and Suburban (and, where applicable, International) norm groups for comparative analysis. Class, Grade, School, and District Summary reports also include the percentage of students at each trait score point and total score point for the school.

Stimulus-Based Prompts

As of the 2016-2017 school year, stimulus-based essays are scored using a 6 trait, 6 point rubric backed by expectations for each grade level. Stimulus-based reports provide individual trait scores, total trait scores, and now a comparative raw score data for Independent and Suburban (and, where applicable, International) ERB member schools. Class, Grade, School, and District Summary reports also include the percentage of students at each trait score point and total score point for the school.
